If it isn't quite as blobby as its competitors, thank Honda's styling. I have the receipt from the dealer as proof. Only one way to find out. I would not have been surprised about this from an American manufacturer, but am shocked that Honda will not make it right. Consumer contacted both Canada Honda and american Honda.
This one either won't go into a forward gear when stopped, or won't shift out of low gear once moving. Went several times to get it checked out. So Honda went back to the drawing board and has fielded an all-new entry for 1999. Torque converter is failing and vehicle has been completely out of the factory-extended warranty part of a class action settlement for 5 years although mileage limitation has not been reached. As family of 6 we really enjoyed having this car. Reverse gear totally failed while attempting to turn around on a busy road.
This is my 4th Honda and will be my last. Life happens and some things get put aside but now it is time to get the ball rolling. They are not even acknowledging that they have a problem with the 99 Odyssey in terms of transmission. My child was in the car when it failed. This vehicle has a multitude of problems. In 2008 with 154600 miles the transmission gave up on the highway, the car just stopped!!! He said the warranty is for one year.
There was no pressuring when it came to buying. Now at 208,000 miles it is slipping again. Update from Apr 4, 2011 : No satisfaction from American Honda and have been inconvenience since November 2010 with no car. Recheck the transmission fluid level after a test drive to make sure it is full. Though We love the Odyssey we are not thrilled by major failures over the years.

The failure mileage was 90,002. The engine light came on. Notes: Some vehicles come with several transmission options and could be very confusing. Thousands of customers have had from 2 to as much as 6 transmissions put in these Odysseys! After two months again transmission failed again same they replaced it. Vehicle will hesitate as you apply moderate acceleration pulling away from a near stopped condition. As their credibility is strained I will have to buy another make to replace the Odyssey.
This particular vehicle has had its transmission re-built two times and it has yet again gone bad. Drove to the Yukon from Edmonton in summer 2005. Most defective or worn-out automotive parts, if brushed aside, can bring to additional damage to other sections. I wasnt worrie about it because i had 10 years extanded warranty. Many service guides and forums suggest repeating the process two or three times to remove more of the fluid, since draining the fluid only removes the fluid in the main transmission body and reservoir, leaving old fluid in the torque converter and valve body. After we get home and research this issue, we feel that Honda has been less than fair and honest.
Honda refuses to help and tells me I am expecting too much as my car is 11 years old and has 125,000 miles. It also makes this odd clicking noise inside the van. Am told my car is 11 years old and they do not think they are responsible any longer. Honda did not charge but should have extended warranty for 1999 models in the first place. The front and side engine mounts were replaced. The past few weeks the transmission has been giving us some problems. But couple recalls we had to go such as ignition, which will fail again down on the road.
Brought it in and was told it needs a new transmission. It marched to the beat of a different drummer. I thought they were the 1 vehicle and the dang price sure isn't. Disturbing to know that Honda didn't really help out their clientele. We miss van a lot, moving kids into dorms, transporting mowers, and bikes.
The current mileage was 90,036. Buy a recycled 1999 Honda Odyssey transmission and save thousands of dollars. Two days later both lights came back on. The dealer diagnosed the problem as a bad transmission and my warranty on the car has already expired. Tag Id B36A, P36A, 20021R36000. Take the middle row seats out, drop the third row seat into the floor and it can haul a ton of cargo.
