I've almost become a complete zealot of his work. Probably not as Shakespeare, because it seems to come from another universe than the one inhabited by the other characters in the play. But viewed by itself - and Dogberry is after all a self-contained character - it's quite a job of work, and Keaton gets points just for trying so hard. It is farce and mime and wisecracks, and dastardly melodrama which all comes right in the end, of course, because this is a Comedy. The second, Benedick and Beatrice, are almost kept apart by the treachery of their own hearts.
You probably already know what the movie's about, but just in case. It is cheerful from beginning to end since we can hardly take the moments of doom and despair seriously. The wit sparkles and cracks between Beatrice and Benedick; a direct counter to the more traditional and borderline sappy form of Elizabethan love exhibited between Hero and Claudio. Meanwhile, meddling Don John Keanu Reeves plots to ruin the wedding. The plot is driven by the kinds of misunderstandings, deceptions and cruel jokes that work only in stage comedy, or perhaps in P. Sunshine and laughter, and merrymakers on a hillside sprinkled with flowers. The setting is gorgeous — a lush, expansive Italian villa, home in the play to Leonato, Governor of Messina Richard Briers , and his young daughter, Hero Kate Beckinsale — and — her cousin Beatrice Thompson in the town of Messina.
Each part is completely delightful Michael Keaton is perfect in one of the most bizarrely comedic roles I've ever seen, and as far as Keanu Reeves' performance, all I can say is that the part was written to be played in that manner. Of course, all the other actors and actresses do a great job in their roles, giving the entire ensemble a nice, rounded out talent. Meanwhile, the older Benedick Branagh and Beatrice feel a powerful attraction, too, but it is expressed through barbed insults and verbal sparring. His evil plan involves the use of impostors to convince Claudio that Hero is a wanton woman, unfaithful to him with any man who comes to hand. The lovers Claudio and Hero are completely and wonderfully upstaged by Benedick and Beatrice, the most perfectly mismatched pair in the history of love, exactly as they were meant to be. Her eyes reveal that she reciprocates.
The film moves briskly through the banter, deception, revelation and redemption with ease and a sense of delight. The script cuts the yards of over-description adored by Elizabethian audiences, but boring to modern ones. While Benedick and Beatrice do their best to assure that they will never become a couple, the scheming Don John plots to destroy the love that has bloomed for Claudio and Hero. Kenneth Branagh directs and takes the lead male role of Benedick opposite his then real-life wife, Emma Thompson, as Beatrice. Overall, even to those familiar with the plot, it's exciting, joyful, even hilarious.
It's easy to follow because the actors are so wonderful at delivery, you should have very little trouble understanding their meaning. When it is announced that Don Pedro, Prince of Aragon and his men are arriving — their approach seems a nod to The Magnificent Seven. Do yourself a favor and watch this. Their targets are sharp-witted duo Benedick Kenneth Branagh and Beatrice Emma Thompson -- a tough task indeed, considering their corresponding distaste for love and each other. Watch it even if you think you don't like Shakespeare. Keanu Reeves, however, should avoid the classics and stick to what he's most famous for: his handsome face. A smart, funny and visually stunning gem of a film to add to Branagh's already distinguished repertoire.
Otherwise, Much Ado shines in casting, set, direction, enjoyment, and emotional impact. Advertisement Branagh is nothing if not a film director of high spirits and great energy. The story involves two sets of lovers. Much Ado About Nothing 1993 Romance. The first, Claudio and Hero, are destined to be almost torn apart by the treachery of others.
I've loved this movie since I watched it for the first time in my eighth grade Shakespeare class and it just gets better and better each time I watch it. No point in discussing plot — it is a 400 year old well-known play. Fun fact: they were married when they made this film.
